The 2020 Mike Wevrick Lecture and Wine & Cheese Social

Please join us at the 2020 Mike Wevrick Lecture and Wine & Cheese Social, which we will be hosting as an online presentation Saturday the 21st of November at 7 to 9:30pm.

So; your place, your wine, your cheese, and get comfortable.

Members Doug and Lisa Ashton will give a presentation titled “Quarantine Quetico” about their fly-in trip to Quetico Provincial Park.

The Zoom meeting will open around 7 pm, when you can sign in.

From 7 to 8 pm, we plan to set up small virtual rooms so you can chat with others.  This will be like the small groups that formed when we were at our traditional get togethers. You will be able to jump in and out of these chat groups as you see fit.

Doug and Lisa's presentation will start at 8 pm. The presentation is intended to be interactive and if you have a question just use the chat or raise your virtual hand. The moderator will coordinate the questions. In general, the presentation will be 45 minutes long followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

From 9 to 9:30 PM we will allow for more Q&A or more small virtual chat rooms.

At 9:30 PM the Zoom call will end.

2018.04.12 - Update - Trip closed and full - PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER OR SEND MONEY. Hello, since yesterdays update, I went from 28 to 45 interested members and non-members signing up. Regretfully this is just to many and I will have to decline some of you. Thank you very much for your interest and support. If anyone knows a site that would hold 50 let me know for next year. 2018.04.11 - Update The main site is full, but not everyone has signed-up and paid yet? A second site has opened and is now full. I have 28 interested members to date. I am looking for someone to open a third site, please and thank you. This year, we have a two piece band to entertain us. If anyone want to add to the ambiance, let me know? Original posting: Hello my fine feathered friends. It is time once again to enjoy the fall colours and have an elegant dinner in the wilderness. This is a social event with gourmet food and a little canoeing thrown in. We had an excellent time last year and several people requested we return to Sherborne Lake in the Leslie Frost Centre area. We have the group campsite #18 booked. The permit allows for 16 people and many tents. For several year we have had overflow sites too. So all are welcome to the canoe tables. The permit cost me $282.50/16=17.66 each. E-transfers, cheques, cash accepted. Paying in advance will confirm your reservation. Please sign-up on the website to prove you are a WCA member. Please be advised that this is an unmaintained forest access road that is to be used at your own discretion. We recommend that only vehicles with four wheel drive and higher clearance use this road. Call the Trails Office in advance for conditions of the road.

• Take Hwy 400/11 north to Hwy 118, exit onto Hwy 118 east. Take Hwy 118 east to Hwy 35. Follow Hwy 35 north to Sherborne Lake Access Road and continue until the end #3508.
• Alternatively take Hwy 401 east to Hwy 115/35 north, exit and proceed north on Hwy 35 through Lindsay. Follow Hwy 35 north to Sherborne Lake Access Road and continue until the end #3508.

2017 Turkey trip - Sherborne Lake - STUFFED FULL LIKE A TURKEY

2017.08.18 - the 3rd site is now booked and full. We now have 26 people attending. Thank you everyone.

2017.08.16 - 3rd site might be opening. This would make 26 people to date.

2017.06.27 - 2nd Site # 19 has now been booked by Doug and Daniela and NOW FULL.

2017.06.26 - Hi, the main site is now full. You are still welcome if you are interested in opening a second site. You just need to make the reservation and sleep on the site. The rest of the time you can spend with us on the main site and enjoy the company and food. I can help you fill the remaining spots on the site if you wish.

I have mention - NO dogs are allow at this food event. We have tried in the past and it did not work out.

Once again, we will return to the Haliburton Highlands Water Trails, Sherborne Lake group campsite # 18. We had a great time last year, if you missed it, read about it in the Nastawgan Winter 2016 issue. Cindy Atsma-Powell wrote a great article about the weekend social event.

This is a SOCIAL - FOODIE event with a little canoeing on the side.

There is a long winding rough logging road to get there. Lots of parking and a sandy beach to unload and launch. A very short paddle to the site. More details to follow as the plan comes together.

I have purchased the permit for the site. It can only hold 16 people in "many tents". This has been a very popular event and fills up fast. To confirm your spot(s) 1) sign-up on the WCA website to prove you are a WCA member. 2) email me to confirm your interest. 3) forward your share of the permit fee to me to confirm your spot(s). 14 spots are now available.

We have had overflow sites the last few years. You will have to book and manage that site.

NOTICE - Be advised, crown land logging operations are planned in various areas around the Haliburton Highlands Water Trails for the 2017 season. Operations are expected to occur in the vicinity of Cinder, Poker, Orley, Raven, Little Margaret, South Jean and Margaret Lakes. Forest Access Roads including the Cinder Lake Access Road, Margaret Lake Access Road and Sherborne Lake Access Road will be utilized as haul routes for these operations. Use caution while travelling these roads and pay attention to posted signage. Luste Lecture 30 Oct

 Hold the date ( Sunday, 30th October) for the 4th annual Luste Lecture at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough. Speaker Gwyneth Hoyle. 

Two significant bookish events that occurred this past summer are cascading together in this year’s George Luste Lecture at the Canadian Canoe Museum.  As George Luste’s incredible donation of rare and historic books about canoes, north and adventure was being boxed up for shipment to the Museum, the CCM’s own Gwyneth Hoyle—author, librarian, adventurer—was in Uummannaq, Greenland chasing yet another touchstone place for Isobel Wylie Hutchison, subject of her critically acclaimed biography of the 19th Century explorer maven, called Flowers in the Snow
 
In the 2016 George Luste Lecture, produced by the Museum in partnership with the Wilderness Canoe Symposium and the Wilderness Canoeing Association, Gwyneth will talk about her own travails in search of historic heroines, framing these in the context of the Luste Rare Book Donation and why this is a significant milestone for the Canadian Canoe Museum’s library and archival collection.  The lecture is set for 2 pm on Sunday, October 30th, with a behind-the-scenes Museum tour at 1 with refreshments and book-signing to follow.  Free for members.  Please join us for a stimulating afternoon of adventure and fellowship.
 
As librarian at Peter Robinson College Gwyneth Hoyle was among the early Trent University supporters of the establishment of the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough.  Over the years, has written and edited a number of significant books and contributions to the canoeing and adventure literature including Canoeing North into the Unknown: A record of river travel 1874-1974, Flowers in the Snow: The life of Isobel Wylie Hutchison and The Northern Horizons of Guy Blanchet: Intrepid Surveyor, 1884 – 1966.  The Pacific Northwest Quarterly called Flowers in the Snow,  “meticulously researched and highly readable.”  A long time friend of both the Museum and the WCA, Gwyneth is the perfect voice to celebrate George Luste’s passions as an adventurer and bibliophile.

Fall Meeting

Join us for a weekend of flatwater and whitewater paddling, hiking and friendship at our Annual Fall Meeting (September 30 to October 2, 2016) to be held at Cedar Ridge Camp, located on 150 acres just south of McArthurs Mills. You can access the Mazinaw trail system for hiking from the camp. The lodge has 10 rooms with 8 beds in each. It also has 4 heated cottages available. There are a number of unheated cottages as well, with indoor washrooms and showers. Camping is permitted, for those who prefer the whole outdoor experience. Food will be provided from Saturday breakfast to Sunday lunch. Vegetarian options are available at each meal. The cost for the weekend is $120.00 plus HST per person. Children under 16 years will be $60.00. You will need to bring sleeping bags and pillows, and perhaps a tent. You can arrive anytime Friday afternoon. There will be some flatwater canoes available for our use. Don’t delay, or you could miss out. Turkey Time Canoe & Social - updated

WE NOW HAVE THREE SPOTS AVAILABLE, LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
October 16 to 18 2015. Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Park - Bottle Lake - Site 106 and second site 105 are now booked. We have a few spaces left on the second site. Emmy Hendrickx has volunteered to manage the second site with me, thank you. We are trying a new location this year. Entry at access point # 7 - Bottle Lake off of Beaver Lake Road. There is a short 181 m portage to the lake. Canoe across the lake to the sites and that is all the canoeing required. These sites have been recommended with nice beaches. Once again the focus of the trip with be on gourmet food and the Turkey.
If you are interested please contact me by e-mail or phone. To add you to the permit, we need the number of people, your age, (child, adult, senior for fees) AND (canoe colour, tent colour, license plate number). ONCE ADDED YOU ARE COMMITTED TO YOUR SHARE OF THE PERMIT FEE.
